These five countries had been battling for independence from Russia since the Second Treaty of Best-Litovsk last year. Many see Hitler's recognition and occupation of Central Asia as a stab in the back to Russia as well as a land grab. Too weak to protect both its western and eastern borders, Russia has remained quiet on the situation.
